Mr. Talabi Adebayo Braithwaite was born on the 2nd of July,1928 in Lagos. He attended CMS Grammar School, where he obtained a Senior Cambridge Certificate in the first grade with exemption from London Matriculation in 1946.
He joined Royal Exchange Assurance Lagos in 1948. A year after, he traveled to UK and trained with the Royal Exchange London where he obtained valuable general insurance experience.
He completed the Associateship examinations of the Chartered Insurance Institute of London in 1951- the first Africa to have obtained the Associteship by examination.
He returned to Nigeria in October 1952 to start the Chief Agency of Law Union & Rock Insurance Company limited London-Lancashire group. The Chief Agency was the first and only one to be given to a Nigerian up till date.
He started T.A. Braithwaite Insurance Brokers & Co in 1958 during which he made further contributions to insurance production and marketing in Nigeria especially in the areas of Marine Insurance and Life Assurance Underwriting which were completely new in Nigeria at the time.
As an Insurance Risk Consultant, Mr. Braithwaite advised the Government of Western region of Nigeria in the formation of Great Nigeria Insurance Company Ltd in 1960. It was through his Consultancy to some prominent Nigerians that other insurance companies were formed in those days like West African Provincial Company and the African Insurance Co. Ltd.
He, together with some Nigerians formed the Life Underwriting Company of African Alliance Insurance Company Ltd in partnership with Munich Reinsurance Company in 1960.
Mr. Braithwaite was the first president of the Nigerian Corporation of Insurance Brokers from 1963 and was returned as President every year for 16 years! He was elected President of the Insurance Institute of Nigeria in 1963 and 1966.
Having enjoyed the privilege of a good education and training and possessing a clear vision of the international nature of insurance, Mr. Braithwaite was quick to recognize the strength of the London market, and was the first Nigerian to place prestigious Nigerian business in the London market as from the early 60’s, especially Marine Hull, Marine Cargo and Aviation.
As a result, Mr. Braithwaite became an underwriting member of Lloyds in 1969 and started underwriting on the Merrett Syndicate as from 1st January, 1970. The first Nigerian to become a member of Lloyds!
Having joined this selected body of international underwriters, he founded a Lloyds broking company in partnership with another Lloyds broker in London. The company was allowed to place business at Lloyds as from 1970. It became an independent broking house of T.A. Braithwaite & Associates (Insurance Brokers) Limited in 1975. It was the only Lloyds broking company in London controlled by non- Europeans.
He had always found time to participate in many of the activities of the Insurance Institute of Nigeria. He was Chairman of the Enabling Law Committee that strove to obtain a Charter for the Insurance Institute to enable the Institute in Nigeria to set its own examinations and award its own diplomas. This has been achieved and the Institute of Nigeria is now turning out numerous qualified Associates and Fellows.
He is Chairman of the Board of Fellows, the highest body the members of Insurance Institute of Nigeria and has contributed to the social and educative life of the Institute.
On the African continent, Mr. Braithwaite was an Executive member of the African Insurance Organisation and received many Gold Certificate Awards and decorations in recognition of his service to insurance all over Africa by the African Insurance Organisation and other Insurance Institutes in Africa as a true pioneer and trail blazer in insurance.
On the World Forum, Mr. Braithwaite was one of the initial Council Members of the World Federation of Insurance Intermediaries.
He serves on the Board of a few companies outside the insurance industry and has served in many other voluntary organizations.
On the 16th November 2000, an award of the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) was conferred on him by the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.
